I race because both of
my parents run marathons and they already made me feel very lazy.
When we went to Boston for the marathon in 2005, I was surrounded by
40,000 people just like my parents. Since I found myself with a lot
of free time, I figured that if I don’t do it now, I won’t ever do
it. I ran a lot of 5K’s as a kid plus seasonal sports. I ran
cross country my freshman year in high school, but I found that it
wasn’t for me and I decided to swim instead. I swam and played
water polo through high school and college. I always wanted to do
triathlons, and decided to put my money where my mouth was and did
an Olympic distance triathlon on a whim. I have learned that you
get out of life what you put into it. If you don’t train, or if you
train poorly, you will race poorly. In the future, I plan to
continue to compete in foot races, triathlons and possibly some swim
meets. My ultimate goal is to qualify for the Escape from Alcatraz
triathlon. People new to racing need to be patient. Elite athletes
are elite because they’ve been practicing for a long time. It is
very easy to become discouraged and quit when trying something new.
So people shouldn’t try to compare their performance to that of the
elites while starting out. If they keep at it, they can see how
much they’ve improved as an individual, and then continue to
advance.
I
love triathlons!!! Everything about it...the camaraderie, the
training, the traveling. It's everything wrapped up into one great
package.
